AB7: ECLIPSE | Call to Yinka Ilori’s workshop
If chairs could talk, what would they say? The 7th Athens Biennale ECLIPSE invites you to join artist and designer Yinka Ilori for the 3-day hands-on chair upcycling workshop The Art of Storytelling through Chairs inspired by traditional Nigerian parables and African Ankara fabrics. The workshop will take place from July 30 to August 5, 2021, at Technopolis City of Athens.
Yinka Ilori is one of the most acclaimed young designers and multidisciplinary artists. His work draws on both his London upbringing and Nigerian heritage to tell stories through design, be it furniture, textiles or architecture. Humorous, provocative and fun, every project that he creates tells a story. Bringing Nigerian verbal tradition into playful conversation with contemporary design, Yinka Ilori’s work touches on various global themes that resonate with different audiences all over the world.
In the workshop, the artist will introduce his work and the history of Dutch wax prints and will be guiding the participants to re-design a second-hand chair using Dutch wax fabrics, vivid paint and various patterns. In parallel, inspired by traditional Nigerian music playing in the background during the workshop, the participants will share thought-provoking stories. On the last day, the chairs will be exhibited together and the participants will discuss their designs and their stories.
